Newborn dry skin, causes and treatments

Do you know that babies could get newborn dry skin just like adults do? In fact, because child’s skin is more delicate, it’s more susceptible to becoming dry.

Cold weather, dry outdoor air and indoor heating can rob skin of its natural moisture, especially in the winter. In addition to this, the summer sun, air conditioning, salt water, and the chlorine in pool water also can be dry skin on newborn. So, what should you do about your child’s dry skin?

  1. Cut back on the bath time

But you should cut bath time down to about 10 minutes instead of a 30-minute bath, and remember that using warm water and soap up sparingly. And please don’t leave the cleansing bar floating in the tub because they can make the tub dangerously slippery. After bathing, you should applying an emollient (skin moisturizer) on newborn dry skin.

When you take your child out of the bath, quickly help him dry with a towel, then apply moisturizer immediately, which will seal in the water that’s still in his skin from the bath. If your child’s skin is still dry even with daily moisturizing, try switching from a lotion to an ointment. Ointments are best product for keeping moisture in the baby skin, but it maybe makes child feel greasy. Therefore, just using small amounts and gently rub it into the skin. You should consider moisturizing twice a day for dry skin on newborn – once after bathing and once during the day. In case your child doesn’t have the patience for a midday slather, you might let him listen to a funny song or watch a cartoon while you apply the moisturizer. If he’s old enough, you can let him do it himself.

  1. Don’t let salt or chlorine dry on his skin

Salt water and chlorine can both be very drying. After your child swim in the pool, rinse off newborn dry skin with tap water, and then apply moisturizer while his skin’s still damp.

If your child is still a baby, you should stick with breast milk or formula for at least the first six months. Keep in mind that drinking a lot of water won’t do anything if you don’t moisturize as well. Without moisturizer to hold in the water, newborn dry skin won’t properly hydrate.

Make sure your child wears mittens or gloves in cold weather to keep his hands from becoming dry and chapped from the cold weather and the wind. No matter what the season, you should take steps to protect him from sunburn and windburn.

Don’t use perfumes or powders on your baby skin, and consider using unscented laundry products. If your child’s skin is especially sensitive, you may rinse his clothes twice, to remove all traces of soap residue. If your child’s skin is very sensitive, don’t dress him in clothing which is tight or rough. Also keep in mind that some fabrics, such as wool, can be especially irritating to newborn dry skin. Finally, be diligent about keeping your child’s nails clean and short if itching is a problem.
